How are medicines discovered?
As the global mortality due to chronic diseases is increasing, the unmet need to develop new medicines is more important than ever. Despite the significant advances in biomedical sciences in the last 5 decades, the number of newly approved medicinal drugs has been declining which has been described in the Eroom’s law as “an adverse trends towards declining innovation and rising costs of drug development over the last several decades”.
The biopharmaceutical sector including private and government institutes are now facing a challenge: develop new affordable medicines for chronic diseases with unmet need while keeping the cost down.
This lecture will review the past and current landscape of drug discovery and development, the challenges the sector is facing and propose new solutions.
