A World Without Marconi – Talk by Alan Hartley-Smith

A World Without Marconi – Talk by Alan Hartley-Smith 16 June 2020

Speaker: Alan Hartley-Smith

This will be an online event: use this link to join via Zoom at the time.

Most people regard Marconi’s contribution to the World as wireless and radio but from this sprang the whole world of electronics which now dominate the modern world, in particular the impact of computers and their many influences. The talk covers our contribution to the development and use of the technologies that enable the many ways in which they affect our world.

After National Service in the RAF as an instructor for Ground Radar, Alan joined Marconi in Chelmsford, working on radar aerial design and then on Display & Data Handling circuit design at the Baddow Research Laboratories. He then moved to Radar Division Military and Civil ATC Systems Marketing and later started their Public Relations unit. He eventually moved to Standard Telecommunications Laboratories in Harlow as Public Relations Manager for ITT Europe Laboratories and then Ferranti Electronics in Oldham which briefly became Plessey. Finally to a UMIST spinoff company then transferring to Electrical Engineering to design a TLTP distance learning system then Computation Department as an under- and post-graduate lecturer on internet and WWW systems and to set up a Centre of Expertise in e-commerce for SMEs.
